SAEe PhD SCHOOL

The Spanish Economic Association and its Education Committee are pleased to announce that the 4th SAEe PhD School in Economics will be given by Raffaelle Saggio (University of British Columbia) and Jose Garcia-Louzao (Bank of Lithuania and Vilnius University) on

«Matched Employer-Employee Data: Theory and Applications»

The School, sponsored by Compass Lexecon and Fundación AUDEO, will take place on the day before the start of the Simposio de la Asociación Española de Economía, SAEe (13 December 2023), and on the morning of the first day of SAEe (14 December 2023) in Salamanca. The first three editions of the SAEe PhD School took place in Alicante in 2019, Barcelona in 2021 and Valencia in 2022. Therefore, we are making a new call for applicants for 2023 SAEe PhD School.

The School aims to present prominent researchers who will offer a broad perspective of their research areas. The School will also feature a session on early career advice for PhD students; on topics such as teaching, surviving the PhD, research presentations, choice of research topics, and the like.

The number of available places is limited. Applicants must submit their academic CV (which should include contact details of academic advisors or sponsors) by September 5th to phd.school.sea@gmail.com. Admission to the School will be based on academic merit. Applicants with a paper accepted to be presented at Simposio will be given priority. The deadline to submit papers to the Simposio is June 26th. To submit a paper to Simposio, please go to the call for papers tab on this page.

Participants of the PhD School need to register to the Simposio. The Spanish Economic Association will award 20 fellowships for students participating in the School. The fellowships will cover the registration fees for the selected candidates. Admission to the School and awarded fellowships will be announced on September 20th.

Short Description

The School will have three sessions. On Wednesday, the first session will delve into the econometric analysis of matched employer-employee data. The course will cover the fundamental tools and techniques employed in analyzing these datasets, encompassing both theoretical aspects and practical applications. Key areas of focus include investigating trends in labor market inequality, studying gender gaps, and assessing employer market power.

The second session of the course will focus on the main administrative dataset that exists in Spain for conducting research in labor economics: the MCVL (Muestra Continua de Vidas Laborales – Continuous Sample of Working Lives). In this session, we will first describe the dataset and learn how to obtain and prepare it for use. We will then discuss its potential and limitations for research, as well as existing applications.

On Thursday, the third session will be devoted to the academic job market and new teaching practices. We will have two activities. A talk on practical advice to succeed in the academic job market and a hands-on session about using experiments as an effective teaching tool. We will introduce classEx, a free online platform; and Experiencing Economics, a free online book as part of the CORE-econ project. During this session you will have the opportunity to experience both the student’s and the instructor’s perspective.
